the contest

this all started innocuously enough. i looked at the empty walls of my home and thought i need some stuff to hang here or there. i next did what most people do and went to the local mall or art show and paid way too much for overdone, pedestrian and forced works of art and photography.

then while visiting a friend, chris mcgrath, i saw a photo sitting in his home. it was a super close-up shot of his brother taking a massive bite out of a plum. it was a mistake or a goof or someone just screwing around, but this image struck me. when i asked chris about it, he shrugged his shoulders and said, yeah it's ok i guess. i was suprised he did not see more in this modest snapshot for this captured blip in time was real and pure and not fabricated in any way. and, it was at this moment the first neuron fired in an event that would ultimately go on to bring us together today.

after that evening in chris' living room i made leafing through peoples photos a sort of pastime, on occassion i even had their permission. what i found was that all sorts of people possessed all sorts of great and unique images taped to their refrigerators, sticking out of novels serving as bookmarks or even crammed into the back of junk drawers.

it was after a multitude of such discoveries that i decided to solicit people for these photos. as incentive, i offered small cash prizes for their trouble. the idea took, and it took me for a ride because the everyman quickly became more than a means for me to collect art for my home. it evolved or possibly mutated into a tantalizing and thought provoking experience for both those who participated as well as curious spectators.

i guess i could go on about all this, but there's no real point. the everyman is just a thing. just another thing to pass the time and bring dissimilar people and thoughts together. i welcome you to browse the pages herein and it is my singular hope that in the imagery and creativity contained in these works you find yourself moved in some way.

and, if i'm being totally sincere with you, i'd have to admit, i'd love to accept a photo for the upcoming contest from you because it is through comprehensive participation that the everyman will truly live up to what its name implies.

your host.

Troy DeArmitt.
